Character quotations:

Now I don't know. Petitio principii isn't a good way to begin. Is it?
District Attorney Waddell responds to Wolfe who just asserted he could offer pertinent information regarding the murder of Clyde Osgood. In rhetoric, "petitio principii" (Latin) is a fallacy in which a conclusion is taken for granted in the premises of an assertion. Waddell, thus, is indicating that it is not an established fact that Clyde was murdered.
